Beyond Lorem Ipsum: My Favorite Text Generators

If you are even slightly familiar with editorial design, publishing, web design, maybe even copywriting, you probably have read Lorem ipsum, the famous ancient text used as a placeholder when the actual content isn’t ready yet, but the document or website has to be designed and set up. It’s been used for decades, and it will probably going to continue gracing us all for years to come. But variety is fun as well, and when you have clients that share your humor, you can have some more freedom choosing the placeholder text for your projects.

Below are some of my favorite text generators. Take a look, have a laugh, and bookmark the ones that you want to use instead of Lorem ipsum next time!

Blind Text Generator

This was the first generator I used. I was actually just looking for the regular lorem ipsum text to fill out some text areas, and found this one with several variations. Their “Far Far Away” story caught my attention, and yes, I have actually taken the time to read their little story.

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts.
Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large.

This generator is a go-to, because it has different options that can be applied  to different projects, depending on your clients, their humor, and the seriousness of the project.

For the feline lovers out there (which, is like all of us, right?), this is a cute and fun text generator full of purryness. You can choose whether you want to use just cat breeds or cat-related text in general.

Cat ipsum dolor sit amet, stare at ceiling light Gate keepers of hell. Snuggles up to shoulders or knees and purrs you to sleep always hungry or claws in your leg but sit in a box for hours love you, then bite you. Mewl for food at 4am instantly break out into full speed gallop across the house for no reason, and stare at imaginary bug.

Doctor Ipsum

When I worked as an in-house designer, I was lucky that most of the people on the team were fellow whovians, or at least understood the references. So, Doctor Ipsum used to be one of my go-tos. Additionally, we often had projects that required mock profiles, so, you bet those were full of Doctor Who characters.

There’s something that doesn’t make sense. Let’s go and poke it with a stick. There are fixed points throughout time where things must stay exactly the way they are. This is not one of them. This is an opportunity!

Whatever happens here will create its own timeline, its own reality, a temporal tipping point. The future revolves around you, here, now, so do good! Bow ties are cool. No. You’re too short and bossy, and your nose is all funny. No idea. Just do what I do: hold tight and pretend it’s a plan.

The unique and cool feature about this generator is that you can choose your favorite doctor for the filler text, or you can get a mix of all of them! (Except for the last one, as of the date this was published.)

Harry Potter Ipsum

This ipsum is probably the prettiest one, design-wise, with a slick, cool layout. It’s also very simple, choose the amount of paragraphs you need and accio text! I have to admit, this one I found more recently, so, I haven’t used it on any projects yet. Waiting for the right one though!

Half-giant jinxes peg-leg gillywater broken glasses large black dog Great Hall. Nearly-Headless Nick now string them together, and answer me this, which creature would you be unwilling to kiss? Poltergeist sticking charm, troll umbrella stand flying cars golden locket Lily Potter.

Pumpkin juice Trevor wave your wand out glass orbs, a Grim knitted hats. Stan Shunpike doe patronus, suck his soul Muggle-Born large order of drills the trace. Bred in captivity fell through the veil, quaffle blue flame ickle diddykins Aragog. Yer a wizard, Harry Doxycide the woes of Mrs. Weasley Goblet of Fire.

Sadly, I can’t always work with fan-specific generators. But that’s when the Cupcake Ipsum comes in! This is the one I’ve used the most recently, since it’s candy! And there’s always room for candy in my projects.

Cupcake ipsum dolor sit amet soufflé tiramisu candy. Bonbon marzipan dragée danish. Chocolate danish lollipop tart chocolate cake jujubes liquorice marshmallow. Biscuit I love chupa chups.

I love macaroon sugar plum. Candy liquorice macaroon donut macaroon candy. Wafer cheesecake I love bear claw jujubes pastry bonbon jelly beans chupa chups.

I also like that this one lets me choose the length of the paragraphs, which is something not every generator does. Yes, you can easily divide paragraphs yourself, but when you have to fill the content of a lot of pages, it can save you a lot of time.

And there they are, my favorite text generators to use instead of lorem ipsum. There’s nothing wrong with using the classic one, I do it myself when I’m doing a quick job with a client I don’t know too well. But if you have room for a bit of extra creativity and fun, use something else! Your clients will find it fun as well.

Let me wrap up with one little tip: if the ones I presented here don’t go with your style, ask Google! There are literally hundreds and hundreds of text generators. You can try “Chuck Norris ipsum” or “Weather ipsum” in your search bar, and you will find what you need!
